Fashion Rules Worth Breaking

fashion rules | picture of women in Buttercream Clothing

It’s time we rethink our position on fashion rules. From a young age, women are pressured to look a certain way, act a certain way, and be a certain way. Well, ladies, I don’t know about you, but we are ready to break free from the rulebooks and expectations. Going with what is ‘in-style’ and ‘most flattering’ is so 2016. Let’s take back our power and bust some fashion myths.

Fashion Rule Worth Breaking #1: Dress for Your Body Type

First of all, our bodies are unique and beautiful in every way. Dressing for your body shape is code for dressing in a way that makes you appear thinner, taller, and curvier. Or whatever is considered ‘ideal’ at the time. For too long, we’ve been put in boxes and judged ourselves based on someone else’s definition of normal and beautiful. Every woman deserves to feel comfortable and confident in her clothing.

Fashion Rule Worth Breaking #2: Dress for Your Age

There really is no age appropriate wear. Don’t feel as though you need to monitor your appearance, or make decisions about your style based on the decade you were born in. Dress for comfort, confidence, and personal style.

Fashion Rule Worth Breaking #3: You Can’t Wear That if You Are A Mom

Just because you’re a mom, doesn’t mean you have to start pushing your favourite clothing to the back of your closet. While some items may be more challenging to wear as a mom (think anything strapless while you have a little one yanking at your top, for example), you don’t have to throw in the towel on your self-expression and limit yourself to “mommy clothes.”

That’s all we have for today, but there are plenty more fashion rules worth breaking (like all of them, for example). When it comes to fashion, wear whatever makes you feel happy, confident, comfortable and free.

Guest Post – My New Neighbour – Shop YYC: Buttercream Clothing

My New Neighbour

Sweet, delicious, soft and delightful come to mind when one thinks of the word buttercream. All of these enticing words are an apt description of Calgary’s own Buttercream Clothing. Designed and produced in Calgary and Kelowna, Buttercream Clothing is swiftly becoming a staple in the Calgary-maker scene. An obvious favourite at Alberta markets as well as impressive international popularity, it’s a brand we are always keeping our eye on.

Candice is the inspirational force behind the clothing line, balancing and growing a thriving business with marriage, motherhood as well as active participation and support of other makers and individuals in the ethical fashion world, like us! In fact, Candice was one of My New Neighbour’s earliest supporters. We love her story and the cozy, adorable clothing her line offers. We’ve partnered with Buttercream Clothing, Vian Esterhuizen Photography and two of our dearest friends to give you a glimpse into Candice’s story and a look at some of our favourites from her Buttercream collection.

My New Neighbour

Tell us about where you are from…

I was born in South Africa and my family moved to Vancouver when I was just two, from there we moved to Kelowna and that is where Buttercream Clothing all began!

What inspired you to start Buttercream?

One Christmas, I was talking with my sister-in-law about her Etsy shop and I thought, I can make aprons and sell them online! I called it Buttercream Aprons and from there it quickly turned to clothing, then suddenly took off!

Tell us the story of Buttercream’s progression to where it is today…

Buttercream Clothing started out with simple maxi skirts, t-shirt dresses and scarves. We have grown so quickly that we now have 14 seamstresses sewing for us and we proudly produce every item ethically and locally in Canada. We have a lot of big goals and this business never ceases to amaze us!

What is your design process? What inspires new items each season?

With a talented team of seamstresses we design between 10-20 new styles each season and roll them out in very exciting website launches. I get ideas from all over, my customers are some of my greatest brainstormers and I find that when I make what my customers suggest, they become my best sellers!

My New Neighbour

We love that you produce your garments ethically. What does “ethical production” mean to you? Why do you think it’s important?

Ethical production means fair treatment and fair pay, to me. Every one of my seamstresses works out of their home studio at the pace that they want, making the items that they want to make. I think it is so important because people are the backbone of this business.

Not many people know there are Canadian options for garment production. How do you choose where to produce Buttercream clothing?

I find my seamstresses from all different places and I have been so lucky to have many that have approached me via email or at markets, we are always looking as we are always growing!

What is important to you when you are choosing your fabrics?

High quality fabrics that last are the most important thing to me. I try to get fabrics that will not pill and that will stay in excellent shape, to provide my customers with the quality that they expect from me.

What are the joys of producing locally? What are the challenges?

The joys of local production are being able to be so involved in every aspect of design and production, I love getting to tweak things until they are just right! The challenges are keeping up with the high volume of production, we are always hiring more people to sew for us in order to keep up.

My New Neighbour

You have a large social media following and have previously mentioned to us that Buttercream has grown enough for both you and your husband to pursue it full time. What has been a key factor or factors in your success?

Never ever stop working! I really am so committed to this business that from the time I wake up until I go to bed, I am pretty much constantly working. That has changed in the last few months as I am not sewing as much and we are not packing orders any more, as we have hired more people to help in that area, but I am constantly managing all of the different aspects of the business.

What are your tips for balancing a successful business with other “life duties” like marriage, motherhood and friends?

I think if you are happy in what you do and if you are fulfilled in your job the rest will follow! By having my husband quit his job to stay home with the family we have so much free time now to do things that we never could have before and the business has benefited so much from that. I always make sure to find moments for the special people in my life and my family always comes first, being a work at home mom is one of the best parts of running this business.

Guest Post – Closet Essentials – Multiwear Pieces.

You know that feeling when something new comes into your closet and you just want to wear it every single day? This new 3-in-1 I got in from Buttercream Clothing is that and then some. It is the perfect wardrobe staple, I can make outfit after outfit with this one thing.

So what is it? It’s the 3-in-1 poncho. I ordered mine in black but there are several different colours to choose from. See them all right here! It can be worn three ways, as a poncho, as a dress and as a skirt.

image-1
Here it is worn as a dress. I covered it up with a white crochet shawl because it was a bit chilly out but looks great on its own as a strapless dress. A gorgeous handmade necklace from Jewel Sofia that I tightened up into a choker and my favourite nude sandals to complete the look.

image-2
image-3
Apparently keeping with the mainly black and white theme, I wore the poncho over white jeans (my fave!) with a cute pair of Manolo Blahnik Trelis.

image-4
I accessorized with this black clutch and a leather cuff bracelet from Bella’s Treasure. (Use LINDSEY25 for my 25% off discount) Mine has the golden key cuff link closure, they have tons to choose from to mix and match. I also love the snowflake one for the upcoming season that we shall not name 😄

image-5
image-6
Now third and final function of this piece is the skirt. I played around with this to get the best look I could for quite a while and finally settled on…

image-7
…this! It’s definitely best with a fitted top tucked in but it can be worn with a shirt overlapping the waistband as well. However, my secret here is that I’m actually wearing a dress under it. I tend to wear dresses under skirts a lot because they tuck in easily and are long enough that they will stay down!

image-8
I wore my black suede pumps and a black leather choker with this.

image-9
It fits absolutely beautifully and I truly would love a closet of just these. I can’t wait to see what other combinations I can come up with out of this!

Let me know what you think and be sure to go check out Buttercream Clothing!

Till next time,

Lindsey xoxo

Guest Post – A Capsule Wardrobe – by Maria

Growing up my mom always had us set out our outfit for the next day as part of our bedtime routine. I grew up figure skating six days a week – four of those days were mornings and I mean six am mornings. There wasn’t much time in the mornings to contemplate which clothes to pack for school. When I got older and finally moved out of my parents’ house I stopped setting out my clothes at night. One night my husband had the delight of listening to me talk in my sleep. I was in a panic about something and crying in my sleep, so he asked me what was the matter. “I am late for work and I can’t decide what to wear” I answered him through my sleep-crying. The following morning when my husband teasingly retold the nighttime drama I had zero recollection of this apparent nightmare but I did feel a familiar sense of anxiety around choosing my outfit. After that I started setting out my outfits at night again, just like I had done all those years at home.

As a mother my mornings once again do not include leisurely time to select outfits. Between dressing my boys, feeding my boys and refereeing their shenanigans I truly have no time nor desire to rifle through my closet in search of the ideal outfit. Just over a year ago I came upon this lovely article about capsule wardrobes. It was a moment of such clarity – reduce your closet, spend less time on outfits and more time doing what you love! I was instantly a fan of the capsule wardrobe. I followed these four simple steps to reduce my wardrobe http://www.whowhatwear.com/how-to-clean-out-closet-4-pile-strategy/slide1 and I can honestly tell you that it has been such a relief. Creating more space, and time, in my life for the things that make me happy is right there at the top of my list. I love not having issues of what to wear weighing on my mind.capsule wardrobe

Of course, I didn’t instantly have a perfect capsule wardrobe, over the last year and a bit it has been a work in progress. And I will admit I am not down to the old thirty-three items, I may never be! But an important part of the capsule wardrobe is having pieces that are versatile, comfortable, confidence boosting and high quality – you don’t want to have to replace your items constantly, this would defeat the purpose entirely. I have slowly added pieces and taken away old pieces, following the 1:2 ratio. My biggest take-away from the capsule wardrobe idea is to only purchase and keep things that you feel good in. Currently, the majority of my wardrobe is made up of Buttercream Clothing items. It’s not hard to create a multitude of outfits with the variety and versatility of their clothing. Not to mention I have not yet worn out or had to replace even one item.

Choosing Buttercream Clothing is a simple decision for me. This clothing is durable and high quality, meaning it’s a smart investment for a capsule wardrobe, or any wardrobe really, but especially one that will see items worn more frequently. The fabrics are so comfortable and easy to wear all day long – not to mention they are environmentally friendly! I am able to wear something all day at work, or all day with my boys interchangeably. They really are designed for living in. I love the way I look and feel in these items, my most confident outfits are composed of Buttercream items.

But a little less about me and a little more about the bigger picture. The importance and impact that supporting a local brand has on the community is invaluable. All Buttercream Clothing is made ethically, right here in Canada. I feel good knowing who made my clothes – knowing they are paid a responsible rate and knowing that they work in safe and healthy conditions makes me feel even better about what I am wearing. Supporting local goes so much deeper than just being trendy and buying something at a market. Supporting local means you are investing back into your community. When you purchase something from Buttercream you know you are helping to employ locals, locals who need jobs and who are being employed to do something they enjoy. I love knowing that I am supporting a family, a family in my community. And in times of downturn, like we are currently experiencing, local businesses like these sustain us. When we support these businesses they can, in turn, support the community by offering employment. And all of this mutual supporting? Deepens our community. It gives us all a sense of belonging, a sense of pride and most importantly a sense of togetherness.

When I open my closet sure, I see less clutter but I also see opportunities, I see fair wages, excellent work conditions, I see clothing made with love from high quality fabrics and I see a community with deep and meaningful connections.

*to learn more about Deepening Community have a read of Paul Born’s “Deepening Community: Finding Joy Together in Chaotic Times”

Meet Maria:

I am a native Calgarian with a passion for old fashioned communities where neighbors know each other, kids play outside and you know you’ve always got a friend. I spend my days working to raise healthier generations – both with my own family and in my work with the charitable organization, Vivo. I believe you can never love too much, teaching kindness is invaluable and there’s nothing a good country song can’t fix. When I feel inspired I share it – www.lovefrommaria.ca

It’s all about love.

The more I think of this business and where it has taken me and my family and why that is happening the more I think about love. It is about a love of a passion for what I do, it is about the love of making amazing customers thrilled with a product, it is about a love of creating a family life that we were hoping for and it is about a love of providing amazing customer service to special people that make this brand what it is.

As we have moved forward with this incredible opportunity I have so many people ask me how did we do it, how do I do it all?! It may sound really stereotypical but you have to really LOOOOVE what you do. Every day, everything about it. Don’t get me wrong there are things that I don’t love, like when things go wrong or when there are obstacles in my way but those things make me better and make the brand better.

Since my husband quit his job last June we have committed to be “all in” with this powerful journey and what we have received in return is astounding! We are able to have the family life that we want and the opportunities that have arisen because of our flexibility has been stunning. We are off to a party celebrating the Oscars in Hollywood at the end of the month, last fall I was able to attend a conference in Las Vegas to source gorgeous fabrics that will be used in the spring line launching in April and there are more huge things on the horizon for this coming year as well!

As time goes on I keep going back to how to make a brand come to life and how to relate to my incredible customers. First of all, I make things that I love and I really do wear something of mine every day, not to just represent the brand but because these pieces are actually my favourites. The next thing that comes quite naturally to me is providing the best customer service that I possibly can in order to give you the best shopping experience possible. And lastly, I always want people to know that these items are produced with love, they are made in Canada (specifically in Calgary and Kelowna) by extremely talented people that are so essential to the make-up of this company.

All over my Facebook page, Instagram and email accounts I see “love this!!”, “just received my order today and I love it!!”, “I love what you do!” it really makes my day to know that this product can evoke such feelings and make you comfortable, cozy and stylish all at once.

So that being said, I send my love to you!

xo Candice

What does ethically made in Canada mean?

At Buttercream Clothing the most important part of our business is that every item is made in an ethical manner which means that every piece is constructed (designed, cut, sewn and finished) in an ethical manner. At this time the Buttercream production team consists of 6 ladies in Kelowna, one lady in Calgary as well as 2 professional manufacturing facilities in Calgary and myself of course! We are all working together to bring you happy clothing that is completely sweat shop free. Every item is manufactured with the most care to create a garment that will last for years to come. All of the fabrics selected are also high quality to last the test of time. We are moving towards more eco fabrics when possible. At this time organic cotton and  regular bamboo as well as organic bamboo products are being used. We are also very excited for the new designs to come!  Candice and the Buttercream Team

What’s with the name?

I often get asked “why Buttercream?” well apart from being delicious like I design my clothing to be, it all started with aprons. I thought it would be a fun idea to make vintage-inspired aprons and that is how the whole thing began. I called it Buttercream Aprons to go with a baking theme. My friends quickly started asking me if I could make clothing and that was the end of that! The brand has come a long way since starting just two years ago, I have been working with some amazing seamstresses, designers and fabric suppliers to make some pretty sweet and super comfortable clothing. I am so grateful for all of the amazing friends, family and most of all, customers that have been supporters from the very beginning!
